In 2022, Tristan Driessens wrote a cycle of new compositions as part of his creative trajectory as an artist-in-residence at the Concertgebouw of Bruges. For this occasion, Soolmaan became a six piece ensemble with established musicians coming from Greece, Turkey, Luxembourg, Italy and Belgium. The Kashgul album line-up consists of the Belgian jazz saxophonist and flutenist Nathan Daems, the Greek neyzen, pianist and singer Christos Barbas, Italian tamburello pioneer Andrea Piccioni, Turkish doholla virtuoso Levent Yildirim and cellist from Luxemburg Annemie Osborne. The upcoming album Kashgul , initially released as a limited edition by the Seyir Muzik record label in 2023, will be reissued on double vinyl and double CD as well as digitally on Zephyrus Records on January 2025.
The album presents Tristan’s new compositions where powerful contrasts and improvisations reveal a jazz approach, inspired by the music from India, Persia and the Ottoman empire.

Op Kashgul (in 2023 al verschenen in eigen beheer en nu opnieuw uitgebracht door Zephyrus) staan naast eigen stukken ook bewerkingen van composities van de Indiase sitarmeester Ravi Shankar en van zijn landgenoot en sarod-speler Ajmad Ali Khan, en een arrangement van een nummer van jazzsaxofonist Art Pepper. De muziek op Kashgul heeft voor mij iets melancholisch en nostalgisch, maar dan het soort nostalgie naar het onbekende, noem het ‘wanderlust’ als je wil.
